We've definitely kicked off 2023 with a bang in the grime scene, with some big announcements, huge drops and even a clash between two long-standing rivals. So with all that considered, let's take a look at what shaped grime in January!
The year kicked off with Yhunga dropping his EP Hella High (click here) on all streaming platforms and with it came a big feature list, with Duppy, Squintz, Logan, Grizzly, Kruz Leone and Subten all lending their talents to create some insane tracks. We saw Flowdan get a well-deserved link up, with none other than EDM legend Skrillex and Fred Again for their track Rumble, which has been going insane in clubs and charted inside the top 20 of the Official UK Charts!
We saw Mez drop a brand new single, linking up with long-time collaborator on the production side, Grandmixxer for Atmosphere - which is one of the front runners for the best single of the year so far. P Money also dropped a hard hitting banger with Jook & Boofy as he called out other MCs for chasing Clout.
There were some big radio sets as well, with J-Fresh inviting Tia Talks, Ozzie B, Neeko, Doller, Loon and Solsa down to Pyro Radio to destroy their set and DJ Slimzee teaming up with Riko Dan for another insane set! Over on Reprezent, Jammz shelled it down with Lozzy C and Kirby T went back to back with Charisma, with Razor on the mic to shell his set as well!
Tommy B released his debut album, Spiritual Hooligan (click here). With features from Nathan Smoker, Frisco and Melissa, the range of styles and emotions that Tommy B shows on this album is impressive. This is definitely a debut to remember and when we look back on this year, this album will be in AOTY contention!
There's always something of some sort going down in the Twitter Spaces with the grime scene and this month was no different. Solsa and Dot Rotten (under the alias Rottimeus.D.Gruffy) went back to back with dubs over Twitter, with some on Twitter contesting who won the clash!
It went down in Manchester at the end of the month, with Treehouse Manchester getting exclusive footage of Cadell coming up north on smoke to clash Subten, who was performing at Prez-T's show. They agreed to do a full on clash in April, so watch this space!
Both The Get Go and Grime Originals announced shows, with The Get Go putting on their show on February 12th, and Grime Originals taking over the Land Beyond Festival in Brighton with their very own stage!
