LRD has been dropping consistent bangers for a while now, showing off his production skills over a range of sounds and styles. His latest offering, the Fatality Riddim, is going to leave a big impact and mark on the grime scene, with a lot of artists coming together with LRD to drop their own versions. He took the time to give me an exclusive interview and insight into himself and his plans for this new project.
Before we get into the work behind the Fatality Riddim, tell us more about yourself!
I started off as a DJ back in the early days of UK Garage & Grime, but stopped when everyone started to move away from vinyl. Not long after that I started making beats when I was given a copy of Reason. I was only really making hip hop beats when I first started because I found it easier than making grime. I found the slower tempo easier to work with back then & I used to love flipping old samples and trying to copy the big American producers’ beats. After a year or two, I gave up making music for a few years until I started back up in 2021.
What was the inspiration behind the Fatality Riddim?
I’ve always wanted to do something like this & used to love it back in the day when loads of MCs would jump on a beat. There are so many examples of it, but the first ones that come to mind as the main inspirations for it are Ice Rink, Pied Piper, The Pum Pum Riddim, Scorpion, Woooo Riddim & more recently the Cammy Riddim. What future plans do you have for this track and all its versions? The first vocal with Fugzi is out everywhere now. The next one is dropping on the 21st of April & then I’m gonna try & drop one every week after that. Eventually I will put them all onto one project and drop that on Bandcamp. I’ve also got a remix EP that I’m in the process of putting together with a few different producers, which will be dropping at some point as well.
When did you envisage this track becoming one for multiple MCs to vocal?
This was actually the first beat I made this year. I had just dropped the ‘Game Over’ beat tape & because of the mixing, promo etc. I hadn’t made any beats for a few months. It wasn’t even called ‘Fatality Riddim’ at first. I sent it to Fugzi & I had to change the name after I heard his vocals.
What else do you have coming and what should else should we check out from you?
I’m not stopping to be honest. Obviously, the Fatality Riddim vocals are gonna be dropping non-stop, but I’ll still be dropping other stuff at the same time. I’ve got a collaboration beat tape with a producer called Oozhe dropping in the first week of May & a single with Animal lined up to drop very soon. After that it’s just beat tapes and collaborations with different artists dropping as much as possible.
