"I'm just trying to learn and grow" - Zedz on his new EP 'The Monologue'!
Zedz gives Shapin' Grime an exclusive interview as his debut EP 'The Monologue' drops!
INTERVIEWSALBUMS
Zedz has been on a roll this year, releasing some insane tracks that bring that gritty grime energy that we all know and love. Now, he has finally given us a project that gives us further insight into the artist and it is not one to miss. The Monologue sees Zedz bring his brash and clear delivery over 6 tracks produced by some of grime's finest producers - namely Filthy Gears, 301 Circular, Glitch and HITPOINT - who bring exactly the type of tone that Zedz wanted on this EP. The darker, chilling production over some of these tracks allows for Zedz to question himself and puts the thoughts into the listeners heads to question themselves. Across the project, Zedz shows exacly why he is one of the best up and coming MCs at the minute in the grime scene and proves further why you should definitely give his music a listen!
I caught up with the man himself to get further insight into his writing methods and meanings behind his work, as well as what inspires him to be an MC! Take a read below.
What made you want to become an MC?
Listening to music has always been my main vice and escape from early, so when I finally went through the process of writing my first couple tunes and then feeling the benefit in a therepeautic sense, carrying on with that and putting it out there seemed like the next logical step.
How is your music reflective of you and your life experiences?
I think most of my songs are just me trying to navigate/articulate how I feel about certain things in life, certain situations. I don't wanna shy away from any subject, I want to be able to turn every event in my life into something I can look back on later down the line, tryna document the journey almost.
What went into the making of this EP?
I think with it being my first project, it's been a learning curve to be honest. The tunes on the project have actually been ready to go for a while already, I was just bare indecisive with the track selection and that. It's definitely helped me realise what I wanna do with future projects. Big up Grindhouse too man, he provided me with an extra pair of ears and feedback when I was putting it all together. I've lost count of how many times I asked him what he thought about different working titles I had for the EP.
What made you settle on the name for the EP in the end?
Well, I had a couple tracks that I wrote in 2021 that were saved as "Prologue" and "Epilogue". So, I thought that seeing as a monologue is a speech given by a single character in a story, and with there being no features on this EP, it seemed to fit.
What is your main message on the project?
I dunno about sending a message to other people, I'm just tryna learn and grow. I think it's more of a message to myself to be completely honest with you. There's some stuff in there about some of the lower points in my life so far, reminders of where I don't wanna be.
What would you say was your favourite track to work on and why?
Ah man, it's a tight one. I enjoyed working on Prologue cos it was the first one that I got down, but I think I might have to say Crumble, just because it's a little different to most my other tunes and I was a bit unsure of it at first, so it was cool to see it all come together.
What would you say the scene needs more or less of and what do you want to bring to it?
That's a tough one ya know, because I know that not everyone looks for the same things within the scene, people value different things. For me, personally, I'd love to see more people putting out tunes regularly, and that's what I wanna bring I guess. I just wanna keep putting music out.
Finally, what can we expect to see from you in the future?
More works! Singles, EP's, all of that. There's still a bunch of producers I'm looking forward to working with, and I've still got some unreleased stuff from the last year or so to put out. Like I said already, I just wanna keep writing, keep creating, and keep putting tunes out there.
